"Graduation is a marker event, a rite of passage, a crossover ritual. For some, it marks the end of allowances and curfews, of the certainty of being provided for by able parents. For others, it marks the end of working shifts to afford tuition, of putting life on hold while waiting for delayed funds from the province, of worrying whether one will continue to have the wherewithal to enroll one semester more. For all graduates, graduation is a transition to adulthood where the world of work looms ever so large and forbidding, waiting to be conquered and subdued."

"April 15 - 1:56 am Submitted By Pam Elliot It's Friday morning at Camp Phoenix near Kabul, Afghanistan. It was supposed to be a morning for runners to train for the mini-marathon. The mountains looked beautiful in the sun's spotlight. But the beauty is difficult to see right now. At 9 a.m. we were told Qudrat had died. Tears started to flow from soldiers and media alike. Being a reporter fell second to being a person who had once held the little Afghan boy. He had brought so much hope back with him to Afghanistan, and we had shared his smile with the world. Selfishly, I wanted to get on a plane and come home and hug my baby girl."

"Supporters of open source are not necessarily anti-capitalist, rather they advocate something that is differently capitalist; the role of money and ownership is acceptable and even desirable outside the core realm of the software code, but not within it. For open source advocates the software business should have more in common with language schools or dictionary publishers; profitable business does not require the ownership of its subject (be it language or software). Hence, profits for LINUX-related businesses stem from associated products and services (Lendon, 2001: 194)."

Cook the books
From: NewsTrove.com

"Sometimes you miss what's right under your nose. For years, there was no great mystery to school dinners: everyone knew they were disgusting and bad for children, but no one could quite summon up the energy to do anything about them. And then along came Jamie Oliver and school dinners went to the top of the political agenda, the government found 280m and everyone lived healthily ever after. Something similar needs to happen now for school books. It's been no secret for as long as most teachers care to remember that schools don't have anything like enough of them, but apart from periodical bouts of hand-wringing, nothing ever changes."

"Actually, this inauspicious status was conferred upon me before I was even born, because I made the one critical mistake that, in American society, constantly delineates the boundary between what qualifies as success and what qualifies as failure: I did not choose my family wisely. Fortunately, my prenatal destiny did not cause any adverse effects during my childhood years. While my parents were far from rich, I seldom missed a meal or doctor's appointment because of financial hardship, and, since my social circle was limited to children similarly situated to myself, I rarely experienced any sense of deprivation."

"“A long time ago, in a country not so far away, I was eight years old, doing my best Darth Vader imitation,” says Hayden Christensen, sitting in Hugo’s on Santa Monica Boulevard in Los Angeles, where he’s enjoying a breakfast of eggs Benedict. Although the 24-year-old Canadian actor doesn’t remember when he first saw the original Star Wars movie, the pop-culture phenomenon permeated his consciousness enough to provide an excellent means of scaring his little sister during trips to New York City. “It doesn’t seem like much has changed,” he says."

POV: how blackness became universal
From: NewsTrove.com

"Not long ago I met this woman at a concert. We were chatting, flirting a lot, and trying to get to know each other. She asked me what kind of music I liked. There's no such thing as Black music'. Music is universal." I walked away thinking about what she said."

How to Be Fair With Off-Farm Heirs
From: NewsTrove.com

"Non-farming heirs often leave the farm in their late teens for careers elsewhere. Most parents are concerned with being fair to all of their children at estate settlement time. Fairness, however, may not mean equal treatment of heirs. Reasons farmers give for unequal treatment of heirs at estate settlement time include these: Off-farm children received a college education, a down payment on a house, or other compensation, so may get less at estate settlement time. The farming heir helped create part of the final estate of the parents by actively contributing to the parents' business over the years, so may be entitled to more."

"Sherlock Holmes of France" is a description that has been given to Commissaire Jules Maigret and in terms of worldwide fame and popularity he certainly deserves to be bracketed with Britain's most famous detective. Just as Sir Arthur Conan Doyle had done with Sherlock Holmes, Georges Simenon tried to dispose of his detective early in the series without fully appreciating his enormous appeal to readers, who promptly insisted on his return. Both authors have also, since their deaths, become very much overshadowed by the icons they created."

ESPN.com - Freewheeling Giants excel without Bonds
From: NewsTrove.com

"No, that's just a joke. Bonds didn't get walked. He was too busy being overwhelmed by the ovation, doffing his cap, ducking his head in respect, covering his face and bowing a couple of times. He also thanked the fans for their support and promised, "I will be back." Until then, the Giants will have to get by without the man who is to San Francisco baseball what heart-stopping mortgages are to San Francisco real estate. And they managed just fine Tuesday, beating the arch-rival Los Angeles Dodgers 4-2 behind a solid start from ace Jason Schmidt."

He's come a long way in the last 34 years, but he's essentially still doing the same task today. Only now, the doors lead not to a few nights' stay, but to homes for Zip's customers and careers for its salespeople. Danziger, 49, left his last post in the hotel industry as president of Carlson Hotels Worldwide to join ZipRealty less than three years ago. At that time, the realty brokerage was a mere baby struggling to find its way out of the surrounding dot-com bust."

Business Deals

"While boardrooms and executive offices host some of the nation's top business deals, another less likely location is - excuse the pun - becoming par for the course. Golf courses provide an ideal location for building the casual camaraderie that underlies the type of business deals often closed with a nod and a handshake. "It definitely opens doors, especially if the higher-ups play golf," says Eden Foster, who Golf Magazine recently named one of the Top 100 Teachers for 2005-06. Foster is director of golf at Calusa Pines Golf Club, where he estimates that nearly 25 percent of his students are improving their game for business purposes."

The Most Expensive Album Never Made

"IN the faint red light of the Rainbow Bar and Grill, Tom Zutaut sips at his drink and spills a bit of regret. It's been 19 years since he signed the then-unknown rock band Guns N' Roses to a contract with Geffen Records, where they turned into multiplatinum superstars. Back in those days, the Rainbow was their hangout of choice. Years after he left the label, he returned in 2001 to try to coax Axl Rose, the band's magnetic leader and by then its only original member, into completing one of the most highly anticipated albums in the industry: an opus tentatively titled "Chinese Democacy."
